Ajayi focused on Rotherham United

Defender Semi Ajayi insists he’s focused on the current English Championship season with Rotherham United despite ongoing speculation about his future.

The Super Eagles defender has dismissed rumours suggesting he might soon jump the ship.

He has emerged as one of the most in demand centre backs in the English championship football following an excellent season at the heart of Rotherham United’s defence.

With the Winter Transfer Window fast approaching, rumours persist in linking the Nigerian defender with a big money move away from Rotherham United.

The defender was keen to downplay transfer talk when quizzed on a potential switch.

“I’m really behind what we’re doing here,” Semi Ajayi said.

“It’s a really good project. I think we can do big things in this league and I’m pleased to be part of it.

“I’d be happy to still be here after January, absolutely, 100 per cent.”

Ajayi, 25, lasted the entire duration as the Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 0-0 with Uganda in an international friendly match at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Tuesday evening.

He put up a scintillating show at the packed arena as the Super Eagles failed to score in Asaba.

He has been a stand-out performer a division higher this term as Rotherham United have kept themselves above the drop zone in the English second tier.

The Millers are under no pressure to cash in on the player when the month-long window opens on January 1 as he is under contract until the summer of 2020.

“Interest from other clubs is not in my control,” he continued.

“It’s flattering but at the end of the day I can only focus on my performances on the pitch. If I let my performances slip, all that attention goes away.

“I’m not focused on any interest. I’m just focused on playing as well as I can and January will deal with itself.”

At 6’4 (193cm) he’s always a threat from set pieces. Add to that his reading of the game, and his improvement in possession thanks to Rotherdam United’s style. This man is world class.

Any movement on the Rotherham United star’s future will clearly have to take a back seat for now, at least until the month-long window opens on January 1.
