Edo Queens Football Club of Benin on Sunday evening at the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri kicked off the 2022, National Football Federation Cup tagged Aiteo Cup, competition on a scintillating note by beating the hard fighting Ibom Angels of Akwa Ibom 1-0 in a tension packed game played under heavy rain fall.
Despite the heavy rain, the two sides gave good account of themselves as Owerri fans who defied the rain were thrilled with good football artistry.
The first 45 minutes of the game ended without a goal. But the Godwin Obaseki girls showed their supremacy by putting the opponents on their toes. They made several attempts at the opponent’s goal but the young sharp Ibom Angels goalkeeper patience David, was always there to stop the aggressive Edo Queens strikers from having their way.
Silent was broken in the 69th minute of the game when Efe Osakpolor, took a bullet shot from a long range to the opponent’s 18 yards box beating the defenders. Before Ibom Angels goalkeeper could put herself together, the ball was already at the back of the net.
The crucial goal scored by Efe Osakpolor, came at a time Edo Queens needed it most. The incredible shot has further solidified her confidence in making it big for the team this season. However it was an explosive encounter. But at the end of regulation time, Edo Queens proved their seniority and superiority over the rejuvenated Ibom ladies.
With this victory against Ibom Angels, Edo Queens FC have now advance to the round of 16 to play their arch- rivals FC Robo of Lagos in a venue yet to be decided.
Edo Queens assistant coach Grace Kurah, should be commended for her tactical input to the game. She has proved beyond reasonable doubt that she has got all it takes to act on behalf of her boss Moses Aduku, who is on National assignment with the Nigeria Women U- 20 FIFA world Cup team.
