In a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s football landscape, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing top-notch sporting facilities and a conducive environment, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s participation in the co-hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside the Republic of Benin.

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, conveyed this assurance during a meeting with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Inspection Team at the Round House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Emphasizing the state’s preparedness to undertake the pivotal role of a host, Hamzat underscored Lagos State’s possession of the essential elements required for the successful execution of a major sporting event of this magnitude. He cited the presence of a vibrant population, world-class sporting facilities, and the unwavering commitment of the government as key components contributing to the state’s suitability.
Lagos State’s experience in hosting international football tournaments was highlighted by Hamzat, who recalled the successful hosting of the under-17 and under-20 World Cup football competitions.
Drawing on this experience, he expressed confidence in replicating the success and adherence to protocols necessary for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations.
“We possess the blueprint; we comprehend the expectations. It’s a matter of executing it once again with excellence,” stated Hamzat, while also acknowledging the unique aspect of a joint bid with the Republic of Benin.
Assuring the visiting delegation of a harmonious blend of public and private sector contributions, the Deputy Governor pledged a hospitable and conducive atmosphere for the tournament. Beyond the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Hamzat shared Lagos State’s ambitions to cultivate football enthusiasm among the youth, aiming to see several Nigerian players represented in teams around the globe.
In alignment with these goals, Hamzat outlined ongoing efforts to upgrade the Teslim Balogun Stadium, intending to elevate it beyond international standards. The construction of new stadiums in various communities within the state was also underscored, reflecting a commitment to nurturing and encouraging young talent in both male and female football.
“We’re implementing projects in Agege, Ifako-Ijaye, Ikorodu, Epe, among others. This not only sets the stage for the tournament but also fosters community engagement in football,” declared Hamzat, who additionally assured that the Teslim Balogun Stadium would be ready by year’s end.
Mallam Mainasara Illo, the Leader of Nigeria’s Bid Delegation for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, expressed optimism during the visit.
Illo shared that the inspection team was evaluating the proposed football facilities presented by the Nigeria Football Federation, encompassing six Nigerian states and two cities in the Republic of Benin.
He stressed the pivotal role Lagos State plays as a frontrunner, underscoring the city’s economic significance and fervent football culture.
