Nigeria will be going for the final hunts on (Sunday 8 September 2024) the final day of the 2024 Paralympics after the harvest of medals on Saturday, Sports 247 reports.
Nigeria had her best day at this year’s edition of games in terms of numbers of medals in a day as three medals were added to the three medals won earlier taking the total medal counts for Nigeria to six going into the final day on Sunday.

Isau Ogunkunle completed his run at the games with bronze medal in Men’s Para-table tennis class 4, singles event while Bose Omolayo won silver in Para Powerlifting and Flora Ugwunwa made it to the podium in women’s para javelin winning the silver medal.
Ugwunwa won Nigeria’s first medal on Saturday as the veteran came back from the disappointment of her failure to win any medal in the Shot Put event to win the silver in the Women’s Javelin F54 with a throw of 19.26 m to win Nigeria’s medal in the Athletics event after Lauritta Onye missed the podium in the Women’s Shot Put F40.
Ngunwa, a former Paralympics recorder holder in the event was beaten to second by Uzbekistan’s Nurkhon Kurbanova, who won the gold medal in style setting a new world record with a throw of 21.12 m setting a new world record, breaking the Paralympic record set by Ugwunwa in 2016.
Nigeria’s Omolayo who won gold in the 2016 and 2021 Paralympics Para Powerlifting won the silver medal after lifting 145 kg as Chinese Han Miayou, beat her to the Gold by setting a new world record with a 154kg lift, while the bronze medal went to Egypt’s Safaa Hassan, who lifted 139kg.
Later on Issau Ogunkunle ends Nigeria’s 24-year Paralympics Table Tennis Medal-less run by winning the bronze medal in the men’s class 4 of table tennis singles event.
Though he lost the Semi final by 3-1 semi-final to South Korea’s Kim Young-gun at the South Arena in Paris to defeat, the Paralympics rule in the event ensured all semi finalists are bronze medal winners.
Ogunkunle becomes the first Nigeria to win a Para-Table Tennis medal in a single’s event after Tajudeen Agunbiade and Alabi Olufemi secured gold and bronze, respectively in the 2000 Sydney edition.
Today at the event, all hope of winning more medals will be on Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Loveline Obiji who compete in the women’s +86kg and 86kg Para Powerlifting respectively as the two are leading contenders for the gold medal in their respective events as Olufemi currently holds the World Record in the 86 kg category with 165 kg.
Obiji and Oluwafemiayo will take to the arena at 9:30 am and 1 pm respectively as Nigeria hopes to finish with eight medals at the Paris Paralympics and close gap on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics numbers where the country finished with 10 medals comprising 4 gold medals , 3 silver and 3 bronze.
Nigeria currently sits joint 54th on the medal table, with Ireland and Serbia who also have one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
A total of 15 gold medals will be awarded in four sports – Para athletics, Para powerlifting, Para canoe and wheelchair basketball before the Closing Ceremony brings the curtain down on the Games.
China is on an unassailable lead on the medals table going into the final day with a total of 216 medals, comprising 94 Gold, 73 Silver, 49 Bronze, as Great Britain is in distant second with a total 120 medals which consist of 47 Gold, 42 Silver and 31 Bronze medals while United States of America are in third position
