Forty Athletes have been Selected to fly Nigeria’s flag at the forthcoming African Under 18/20 Junior Championship in Ndola, Zambia later this month.
The Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Onikeku revealed this to journalists after a one-day National Trials which held at the Steven Keshi International Stadium, Asaba.
Mr. Onikeku said the Athletes selected for both the Under 18 and Under 20 were the best in their categories saying they would go into closed camping to fine-tune the athlete’s preparations for the African Junior Championship.
According to the AFN Technical Director, the athletes would go through different programs especially baton exchange and conditioning to put them in top shape for the continental Fiesta.
Mr. Onikeku also revealed that the decision to bring Team Nigeria training Camp to Asaba was to enable them to get used to the modern facilities at the Steven Keshi Stadium in a bid to enhance their performance as well as get them used to the type of facilities that they might meet in Ndola.
He said the tracks at the Steven Keshi International Stadium were the same as what was used at the Commonwealth Games asserting that the athletes would not give excuses as they are currently training with the best facilities in the country.
Meanwhile, the Team Nigeria contingent is expected to depart the country for Zambia before the twenty-ninth when the Championship is billed to commence.
