The 13th African Games culminated on Saturday, the 23rd of March, with a spectacular closing ceremony held at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.
The event, which commenced officially on the 8th of March, witnessed the participation of over 5000 athletes and coaches from 55 countries, competing in 30 meticulously selected sports disciplines across 10 venues throughout Accra, Ghana.

In his address, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Adoo, expressed his commendation, stating, “Ayekoo is a Ghanaian way of saying well done.”
As the nations paraded into the stadium, an atmosphere brimming with excitement and pride permeated, reflecting the collective values of unity and friendship.
The opening ceremony dazzled with vibrant displays of colour, choreography, and symbolic representations that celebrated Africa’s rich diversity.”
Chairperson of the African Union Commission, HE Moussa Faki Mahamat, extended gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions to the successful organization and preparation of the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.
Recognizing the role of sports in promoting peaceful co-existence, African unity, and integration, he emphasized the significance of the African Games in advancing continental agendas and priorities since its inception in 1965.
Egypt emerged as a dominant force in the competition, amassing a total of 189 medals, including an impressive haul of 101 golds.
Team Nigeria displayed exceptional talent and determination, securing a total of 121 medals, including 47 golds, earning them a well-deserved second place on the overall medal table.
South Africa followed closely in third position, garnering a total of 106 medals, including 32 golds.
Other participating countries also showcased commendable performances, earning medals and invaluable experience.
The closing ceremony featured cultural displays, military band parades, the parade of participating countries, performances by various artists, and the highlight of the day: an appearance by Stonebwoy, Ghana’s renowned musician.The African Games served as a platform for showcasing talent, with new stars emerging as athletes competed for a chance on the Olympic stage.
Participants departed with lasting memories, eagerly anticipating the next edition of the African Games.
The 14th African Games are scheduled to take place in Egypt in 2027, promising another exciting chapter in the continent’s sporting journey.
