The maiden African football league will see “The People’s Elephant”, Enyimba FC of Nigeria take on Moroccan giants Wydad AC in the quarter finals in a bid to win the first edition of the priced trophy.
Speaking to Sports247, assistant coach of Enyimba FC, Olanrewaju Daniel, popularly called Yema, who was on the touchline in the 3-2 victory over Akwa United on Match Day three of the NPFL said his side are not favorites to win the tournament but they would show no respect and try to win as is the culture at Enyimba.
“The spirit of Enyimba is to win all games and Wydad would not be an exception even though we’re not favorites. We will enjoy the tournament, compete and try to win as they’ve even played more league games than us. However, we won’t show any respect to them at that”, he said.
“We’re underdogs honestly. The favorites are the Northerners, Al Ahly and Wydad so we’re not putting pressure on ourselves even though we want to win, compete and see what comes out of it”, Yema added.
Speaking in the team’s preparedness and the mood in camp on the back of a league victory, Olanrewaju Daniel expressed the excitement among the players to be taking part in the maiden African Football League tournament.

“The spirit is very high in camp, we’re excited, lucky and privileged to be participating in the first edition of what you can call the biggest club competition in Africa”, he stated.
“We didn’t get here by luck but by pedigree, the players are excited and looking forward to Sunday to defend the badge and give their all, so we’re good to go”, Olanrewaju concluded.
Enyimba hosts Wydad at the Nest Of Champions in Uyo on Sunday, 22nd October 2023 with the return fixtures just a few days away.
