Sam Onikeku, the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has expressed satisfaction with the level of success achieved during the AFN national trials.
He commended the domestic athletes for their performances, noting that they demonstrated remarkable skill and competitiveness on the track and field.

According to Onikeku, the national trials provided a very important platform for Nigerian athletes based within the country to showcase their talents and earn spots to represent Nigeria at the upcoming African Games.
“Well, the competition is of the greatest standard and I’m so happy and impressed that the opportunity we decided to give the athletes based in Nigeria to compete and to be able to prepare for the African Games went smoothly.”
He highlighted several standout performances, including impressive times in the women’s 100-meter race and exceptional throws in the javelin event.
Onikeku emphasized that the competition witnessed performances comparable to those of Nigerian athletes based abroad, indicating the high standard of talent within the domestic athletic community.
He cited examples of athletes achieving notable times and distances, such as a widget time of 11.19 seconds in the women’s 100-meter race and a javelin throw exceeding 77 meters.
The technical director expressed confidence in the readiness of the athletes to compete at the African Games, asserting that they are in top form and fully prepared to represent Nigeria with distinction.
He lauded the athletes’ commitment to performing credibly while proudly representing their country in Ghana.
“We believe that the Athletes are in top gear because everybody is ready to go and give their best for their country and have undertaken to do well and to perform credibly while representing Nigeria in Ghana.”
As preparations continue for the African Games, Onikeku’s remarks underscore the optimism and belief in the capabilities of Nigerian athletes to excel on the continental stage.
