The AFN, under the leadership of Chief Tonobok Okowa, appointed a five-member probe committee, led by its First Vice President, Tafida Gadzama. The committee’s mandate is to review the federation’s financial transactions since the beginning of the current administration in 2021, with the objective of assessing income and expenditure and reporting its findings to the executive board.
Aside from Tafida Gadzama, the committee includes members Maria Worphil, Samuel Onikeku, and Victor Okorie. Victor Okorie, who serves as the Performance Director of the AFN, emphasized that there is no need for concern and that the federation remains a united entity.
He stated, “There is no cause for concern. We remain one big family. We are good.” Okorie’s comments come as a response to earlier concerns that the establishment of the five-member panel was intended to target specific members of the federation.
Samuel Onikeku, the Technical Director of the AFN, also addressed these concerns, asserting that the probe’s purpose is not to target individuals but to conduct a thorough review of the federation’s finances. He clarified, “Our president (Tonobok Okowa) is aware of everything, and it is not to witch-hunt anyone. We just have to look at our finances and see if everything is in order.”
This financial probe marks a significant development for the AFN as it represents the first time in over two decades that the executive board has initiated an investigation into its own activities. The move is part of the federation’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing its finances and operations.
As the probe panel begins its work, the AFN aims to ensure that its financial practices align with established standards and regulations, ultimately strengthening the organization’s governance and operations. The federation remains focused on its mission to develop athletics in Nigeria and support the country’s athletes in achieving their potential on the global stage.
