The Class of 2024’s confident performance avenged past disappointments, including Nigeria missing the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals and the tragic death of Samuel Okwaraji during a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Angola.

The Sable Antelopes, seeking their first-ever AFCON semifinal appearance, faced an uphill battle against Nigeria, a team with 15 previous semifinal appearances in 19 tournaments.

Despite Angola’s aspirations, Nigeria dominated the game, showcasing their form and control.

Ademola Lookman opened the scoring in the 41st minute, converting a precise pass from Moses Simon.

The Eagles continued their tidy and strategic play throughout the match, managing the game effectively.

While Angola made efforts in the second half, the three-time champions maintained their dominance, posing a constant threat on the counter.

Nigeria’s defensive resilience prevented Angola from capitalizing on a rare chance in the 59th minute when the ball hit the upright.

In the closing stages, Nigeria believed they secured a second goal, but Victor Osimhen’s powerful header was deemed marginally offside by Senegalese referee Issa Sy.

Osimhen continued to challenge the defense, with an 81st-minute effort blocked by Buatu.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s confident save in the final minute secured the Eagles’ place in the AFCON semifinals.

The Super Eagles will now face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

The semifinal encounter is scheduled to take place at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on Wednesday, adding anticipation to Nigeria’s quest for AFCON glory.
