The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday defeated the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone 2-1 to begin the African Cup of Nations 2023 qualifiers with maximum points.
Jose Peseiro set up his side with two strikers Sadiq Umar and Victor Osimhen who were both absent from the teams previous friendly games against Mexico and Ecuador which ended in a defeat for Nigeria.
Jonathan Morsay initially put Sierra Leone ahead very early in the game before Alex Iwobi found the bottom corner off a pass from Moses Simon then Victor Osimhen added a second minutes later to end the first half and the entire game with a win.
Nigeria are currently placed second in Group A after Guinea-Bissau defeated São Tomé and Príncipe 5-1 to stay top of the table on goals.
The Super Eagles next face São Tomé and Príncipe in Morocco on Tuesday, 13th June, 2022.
