AFCON 2021: “I Am Under Pressure Just Like Pep Guardiola And Mourinho” Says Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen admits he is under pressure to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Eguavoen was appointed as Gernot Rohr’s replacement in December following the dismissal of the German after five years in charge.

Speaking after the team’s first training session at the VSTS-Annex of Roumde Adjo Stadium, Garoua, Cameroon, the former defender said he is under pressure but claims it is no different from the world’s top coaches.

“Pressure? Yes, I am obviously. It’s not just me, even with Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, or Gernot Rohr, you can’t say you won’t be under pressure,” the coach said.

“It’s like Manchester City, one of the best teams in the world at the moment, playing the best brand of football at the moment. Guardiola is one coach that I adore. He has not been able to win the UEFA Champions League with City. You cannot say he is not under pressure to win it.

“People expect Nigeria to win the AFCON and that puts me under some pressure but I will take it and digest it. We take each game as it comes. All the teams here have come to prove a point.”

Meanwhile, One of Africa and Nigeria’s leading property companies, Adron Homes and Properties limited have thrown its weight of support behind the Super Eagles to triumph in the AFCON championship slated to begin this weekend in Cameroun.

The company, which has the interim coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, as one of its ambassadors, expressed optimism that Eguavoen has the experience and technical capabilities to take the Super Eagles to the podium at the championship.

Group Managing Director of Adron Homes, Aare Adetola Emmanuel King, said ” we’re proud of Augustine Eguavoen, who is one of our ambassadors. He is experienced, disciplined, and a true patriot. We believe, that he has the wherewithal to lead Nigeria to success at the championship.”

Nigeria are drawn in Group D with Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau. They will begin their Nations Cup campaign against Egypt on January 11.
