AFCON 2019: Iwobi Wins Christian Chukwu’s Nod As Playmaker

Arsenal of England attacker, Alex Iwobi has won the verdict of former Super Eagles head coach, Christian Chukwu for a permanent role as playmaker with the Nigerian national team.

After watching Iwobi dazzle in that role during two victories against Libya, on Saturday in Uyo and Tuesday in Sfax, ‘CC’ said the youngster has shown promise of excelling in a new role for the Eagles.

Chukwu said in a chat with sports247.ng that Iwobi looks good already to be the solution to Nigeria’s attacking midfield duties.
Following Iwobi’s displays against Libya home and away, the AFCON 1980 winning captain, fondly called ‘Chairman’ during his heyday, said he can only advice Iwobi to work even harder and take over the position.

Chukwu admitted that it would ultimately mean Iwobi stepping into fully replace Eagles’ skipper, John Mikel as Nigeria’s attacking midfielder, but said the team need such assurances for the future.

Speaking in a chat with sports247.ng on Thursday, Chukwu added: “I happy to see Alex Iwobi stepping up into attacking midfield position of the Super Eagles.

“He did well home and away against Libya, and I will just advice him to work harder to maintain that form and keep his shirt in that role.

“It gives us an assurance that we have a ready made replacement for the captain, Mikel Obi, who can now be replaced fully in future by Iwobi.”
