Badminton Singles African champion, Dorcas Adesokan says she devised a game plan by studying her rival’s weaknesses which resulted in her first-ever victory over African top-ranked player Kate Foo Kune, in the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship.
The tournament which was held in Port Harcourt saw Adesokan clinch her maiden African title with a straight set 21-12, 21-13 victory over the defending champion, who had held a 4-0 head-to-head record against the Nigerian.
“It makes me feel so great,” Adesokan who had lost to the Mauritian on several occasions stated after the victory.
“I wanted to take the gold and I had to watch videos of our previous matches to discover her mistakes. I decided to work on her weaknesses so I think that is why I won.”
She added: “She is a left-handed player and for left-handed players the forehand use to be very weak because their power is on their overhead so I tried to work on that.
“I noticed she is a crossplayer – she hardly plays straight shots so then I focused on that, then I noticed she’s fast, so I needed to be faster and I have to recover from her shots quickly.”
Adesokan will be representing Africa at the Total BWF Sudirman Cup in China later this month.
