Ademola Lookman was the difference marker as Atalanta defeated Fiorentina 1-0 at home on Sunday to move joint-top of Serie A, reports Sports247.ng.
Atalanta needed a win to stay joint Serie A leaders with Napoli after the Partenopei defeated Torino 3-1 on Saturday to move to 20 points after eight rounds of matches.
After a scoreless first half, Atalanta broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Lookman scored from close range. The Super Eagles winger tapped the ball into the back of the net from six yards following a Luis Muriel cross from inside the box.
The home side came close to doubling their lead in the 67th minute when Joakim Maehle was through one-on-one with the Fiorentina goalkeeper. The wing-back had his effort saved.
Lookman was subbed off in the 74th minute. His goal proved to be the match winner, sending Atalanta to second on the Serie A table, level on 20 points with first placed Napoli. Next Sunday, October 9, Atalanta will travel to Isaac Success’ Udinese for their next match.
Lookman joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig back in August for a reported €9 million fee. The 24-year-old winger has 2 goals and 3 assists in eight matches for La Dea this season.
