The highly anticipated 9th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is poised to commence in grand style tomorrow, February 10th, 2024.
The press conference held at the Access Bank Headquarters on February 9th, which saw the attendance of esteemed dignitaries including CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, Yusuf Alli, Race General Manager, the new Lagos State Sports Commission DG Olalekan Fatodu, and Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Titilayo Oshodi, among others, heralded the much-awaited event.

This year’s marathon boasts the participation of 88 gold-label runners and 15 refugee runners, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and social impact.
Yusuf Alli, in an earlier statement, expressed optimism about elevating the race to platinum label status for the 10th edition, emphasizing the caliber of athletes set to compete. Notable contenders include former world record holder Demis Kipmeto (Kenya), Kelkile Gezahegn (Ethiopia), Kiptoo Edwin (Kenya), and Valery Jemeli (Kenya), the leading female contender.
While acknowledging the race’s rapid progression to a silver label within four years, Yusuf Alli appealed to World Athletics to consider factors beyond time returns in upgrading it to platinum label. This sentiment was echoed by Bukola Olopade of Nilayo Sports Management, who emphasized the opportunity to showcase the talent and determination of refugee runners.
Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Bukola Olopade, expressed readiness to make this year’s race memorable and to highlight Nigeria’s hospitality and rich heritage.
Vice President of World Athletics, Jackson Tuwel, commended the organizers for their efforts, describing the marathon as one of the best globally.
He emphasized the importance of synergy among African marathons to enhance attractiveness and ensure adequate compensation for runners.
Former and current presidents of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Solomon Ogba and Tonobok Okowa, expressed hope for achieving platinum label status, urging increased support from Access Bank, the race’s sponsor.
Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, affirmed the state government’s unwavering support for the marathon, assuring seamless logistics and enduring legacy.
Access Bank’s Chief Communication Officer, Amaechi Okobi, reiterated the bank’s commitment to the marathon, emphasizing its role in showcasing Nigeria’s potential.
He announced the introduction of the Access Women Network race, aimed at promoting women’s health through sports and charity. Proceeds from the race will be donated to charity, underscoring the event’s broader societal impact.
