Super Sand Eagles veteran, Abu Azeez has admitted he is totally excited that he was able to hit his 100th goal for Nigeria at the African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations, sports247.ng reports.
Azeez took his tally to 103 with the Nigerian squad, as he helped them beat Egypt 7-6 on Wednesday and pick a ticket to the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, after which he spoke about his excitement.
Abu’s day with history came on a day the Nigerian team pulled off multiple heroics against the African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations hosts, and equally reached their third final in the competition’s history.
Azeez scored four of the goals, to take his Nigerian tally to 103, while Emeka Ogbonna netted twice and Taiwo Adams got one.
It means Azeez now has seven goals at the ongoing championship, while Ogbonna and Adams have four each.
The Eagles and Abu now have another match to aim for more history, as they will see a third continental tile that would take them to Paraguay 2019 as African champions, and make up for their 2016 loss in the final on home soil against Senegal.
Victory for the Sand Eagles on Friday would mean a second AFCON trophy for Nigeria within 13 days, following the Super Falcons’ success at the Women AFCON championship in Ghana, which is exactly what Sand Eagles coach, Audu ‘Ejo’ Adamu says they want to achieve.
Adamu stressed: “We came here to go all the way, by qualifying for the World Cup and winning the Africa Cup.
“I am happy that these boys did the nation proud by staying calm and then going hard when necessary to get the World Cup ticket.
“We have achieved one of our objectives; the other is pending on Friday.
“Now that we have qualified for the World Cup, we will be relaxed to play the final with huge confidence.”
