West African Boxing Union (WABU) Remi Aboderin says he is happy to see the revival of pugilism in Nigeria, and says he cherishes seeing the recent spate of professional bouts in the country.
Ahead of another corporate backed boxing show coming up in Lagos this month, sports247.ng can report that Aboderin is excited and ecstatic at the prospects of more giant strides being made by the country.
While hailing corporate support for the sport, Aboderin described the forthcoming World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental super-featherweight title bout as further indication of the revival of boxing.
The bout, one of the eight scheduled for the contests at Tafawa Balewa Square, will see Nigeria’s Seun “The Machine” Wahab take on Tanzania’s Issa “Peche Boy” Nampepeche.Aboderin, who is also the secretary-general of Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), added that staging the event in Lagos is confirmation of the revival of the sport in country since 2014.
He recalled: “Some four years ago, we could not have imagined that a prestigious title bout such as this will take place in the country, as the fortunes of boxing locally had plummeted.
“It is worthy of note that the WBF Intercontinental title is just a tier below the world title in the category.
“It puts the winner in the frame for the world title. This demonstrates how far GOtv Boxing Night, which began in 2014, has brought boxing.”
