In a recent interview, former Nigeria International, Abiodun Obafemi, shared his insights on the current state of the Super Eagles, emphasizing the importance of player accountability in achieving success on the field.
Obafemi acknowledged that while Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, may still be refining his coaching approach, the players themselves play a crucial role in the team’s performance.
He stated, “As an ex-international has said, another aspect we need to look at is the mentality of the players. They also need to push themselves from my own opinion honestly; they’re not pushing themselves.”
Expressing his concern, Abiodun Obafemi highlighted the disparity in the players’ performance for the national team compared to their club sides.
He remarked, “They’re not pulling the way they pull themselves in their club side. But this is their country. The coach has his fault, some of his decisions I’m not satisfied with, honestly.”
Furthermore, Obafemi criticized the continuous experimentation with the lineup, stating, “Then again, we can’t have all these stars and then we continue to experiment every day. I don’t like that. Whoever he picks in the future should be able to perform. So the coach has his faults and the players as well.”
Obafemi’s candid assessment sheds light on the need for both the coaching staff and players to address their respective shortcomings, fostering a more cohesive and successful performance for the Super Eagles in future endeavours.
