Abia Welcomes the World as Para Badminton Championship Opens in Colour and Spirit

Umuahia was full of rhythm of celebration as the International Para Badminton Championship officially began on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, transforming the Abia International Conference Centre into a stage of culture, unity and resilience.

Athletes from 12 countries including Brazil, Peru, Egypt, India and Rwanda strode proudly behind their flags. The cheers rose higher as Nigeria, the host, entered last, greeted with applause that seemed to lift the roof of the arena.

From the desk of the State government. “This para badminton competition reminds us of the profound truth that ability is not limited by disability,” he said. “It is a testament to Abia’s capacity for hospitality, vision and readiness to lead Africa in inclusive sports development.”



‎The state Deputy governor reveals the administration’s commitment to building a state where inclusivity is not an afterthought but a guiding principle, one that stretches from education and healthcare to infrastructure and sport. He urged the athletes to embody fairness, courage and inspiration in their performances.

‎The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba, the CEO of the Badminton Confederation of Africa, Jeff Shigoli, and the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, all applauded Abia’s ambition and preparation. Their message was clear: this event is not only a competition, but a landmark for para sport in Africa.

‎The ceremony closed with the athletes’ oath, taken on behalf of all participants by a representative from Egypt, marking the formal start of the games.
