Oki United goalkeeper Abeeb Ogunrinde has spoken about his national team experience and being recognized for his performances in the just concluded Peace Cup.
Ogunrinde was exceptional between the sticks for Oki United, so much that he was named the best goalkeeper of the Peace Cup despite his team coming second in the competition.
Speaking with Sports247 after the final defeat to Akinola All-Star, Oguyinde said he was proud of his performances in the tournament and thanked the organizers.
“I am very proud of my performances. Not the result we were expecting but I am happy that out of the sixteen teams that participated in this tournament I was being voted as the best goalkeeper. I really want to appreciate the organizers.”
Abeeb also gave some insights on his time with the Nigerian national U17 team recently where for some reason he had to leave the camp.
“About the national U17, it was an honor to find me in the national team of Nigeria. But something happened while I was in the team camp. Coach Fatai Amoo had already seen me as the first choice but due to the issue of age, I had to leave the camp.
“My sights are now set on the U20 team which I know that with the quality I have and with the little time I spent with Fatai Amoo and the goalkeeper trainer, it makes me know that I still have the chance of representing this country one day. I have what it takes.
He added: “Goalkeeping has always been my thing right from my childhood. Now I’m taking my time to train more and gain more experience. That is why I also find myself being part of this [Peace Cup] competition and I know in the nearest future you will see me out there because my target is to be Nigeria’s number one.”
