Fast-rising tennis youngster, Philip Abayomi has raised alarm over the country’s status among other nations in West Africa, as he says many of them are well ahead of Nigeria.
Abayomi, who was recently on a tour of West Africa, where he played in the ITF Junior Circuit, told sports247.ng that Nigeria is playing catch up among smaller nations in the region.
The talented youngster, who toured Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic for two months, said he was happy to go out competing to improve his level.
“I was happy with the chance to improve my ranking in the junior circuit, in a bid to brighten my chances of playing in the Junior Grand Slams.
“I was surprised to see during my stay in Ghana, Togo and Cotonou that all of them are leaving Nigeria behind.
“We are talking about being the giant of Africa, but these so called small countries have left us behind, and we are now struggling to catch up with them in terms of facilities, competitions and talent development.”
