Akwa United Football Club has officially accepted the resignation of Head Coach Fatai Osho, a decision met with mixed feelings by the club’s management.
Chairman Elder Paul Bassey acknowledged Osho’s coaching prowess but highlighted the harsh reality of the football world, where even talented coaches face the consequences of a team’s poor performance.

“Coach Osho is a victim of worldwide football tradition where coaches, no matter how good, pay the price for a poor run of their teams,” stated Elder Paul Bassey. “He is a good coach, one of the best in the land; unfortunately, it did not work for him at Akwa United.”
Osho inherited the coaching role at a club that has maintained a tradition of excellence for the past eight years, making his tenure a challenging one.
Despite the team’s recent struggles, the management acknowledged Osho’s qualities and expressed gratitude for his efforts. “We wish him well going forward,” added Elder Paul Bassey.
The Akwa United management faces the challenging task of finding a suitable replacement for Osho, acknowledging the difficulty in filling his shoes.
The club has received numerous coaching applications from both local and international candidates.
However, the management emphasized that they were not in a hurry to make a decision. In the interim, the assistant coaches, led by Umar Abdullahi, will take charge of the team.
In response to his resignation, Coach Fatai Osho took to Twitter to express his gratitude to Elder Paul Bassey. “I can’t thank you enough for my time at Akwa United FC,” he wrote. “You’re a rare breed that deserves all happiness and success. We gave it our all but it was not to be. This temporary setback will be followed by unimaginable success. I will forever appreciate you.”
Akwa United, the 2021 league champions, currently find themselves in the danger zone on the league table, occupying the 17th position with 14 points from 14 matches.
The team’s recent struggles prompted the decision to part ways with Coach Fatai Osho. The Promise Keepers are gearing up for a crucial match against Sunshine Stars on Thursday, December 21, at the Eket Stadium before embarking on a Christmas day journey to face Katsina United on December 28, 2023, for their match-day 16 encounter.
