In an exclusive interview with Sports 247, Elder Akpala expressed his surprise and gratitude for the celebration. “They took me unawares. It was a surprise. But thank God it has happened,” he said.

When asked if turning 70 made him feel any different, Elder Akpala responded with a sense of timelessness.

He stated that age is just a number and he continues to feel youthful and energetic. He emphasized that life is for the living, a motto he lives by, and he believes he can still perform at a level comparable to much younger individuals. Despite being 70, he actively plays football with team members who are under 40.

Elder Akpala’s passion for football began in his youth. Despite his father’s disapproval, he pursued the sport fervently.

His football journey took him from Aba to Kano and back to Aba during the Nigerian Civil War, which disrupted his education and early career.

He became known in his village for his football skills, despite his father’s preference for farming over sports.

Throughout his career, Elder Akpala played for several clubs, including Bendel Insurance and NNPC Warri.

In the early 90s, he joined All Stars International FC and eventually became its Vice President under President Uchegbulam Amanze. He continued playing actively even after relocating to Abuja and later back to Lagos.

At 70, Elder Akpala remains an active footballer with All Stars International FC, training regularly at Eagles Club.

He credits his good health and vitality to regular exercise, noting that he rarely falls ill and does not visit the hospital often.

He emphasized the importance of exercise and fitness, advising the younger generation to stay active and pursue their talents.

He encouraged young people to seek support from their parents for their football aspirations, emphasizing that there is a future in football.

Elder Akpala concluded by reflecting on the enduring legacy of his football journey. Although he missed the opportunity to play professional football in his youth, he finds fulfilment in his active participation in the sport and the camaraderie of playing with veterans who have represented Nigeria in international competitions.

Elder Akpala’s story is a testament to the enduring power of passion and the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle at any age. His life and career continue to inspire both young and old football enthusiasts.
