Awoniyi Denies Joy In Wreaking Gent With Goal

Royal Excel Mouscron of Belgium attacker, Taiwo Awoniyi has denied that he took personal pleasure in netting a winning goal against his former club, KAA Gent last weekend.

Sports247.ng reports that Awoniyi struck against the club that refused to give him enough playing time during the first half of the season, which he spent with them on loan from Liverpool.

Though Awoniyi was at Gent on the strength of strong recommendations from Liverpool and he excelled all through the previous term with their league rivals, Mousrcon, he was not given the relevance he deserved.
It was such a surprise coming from a team that has a strong history of Nigerian players excelling in their squad, among which are Samuel Kalu, Moses Simon and Peter Olayinka.

Dramatically, though, Awoniyi was back at Gent with Mousrcon, which he rejoined at the start of the year, and he made easy work of hitting the net against the club that failed to know his value.

The ex-youth international’s third goal of the year helped Mouscron win 2-1 and move to 10th on the log with 29 points, while staying unbeaten since his arrival last month.

However, the 21-year-old Awoniyi, who also scored the game-winning goal against KV Oostende before doing same against Genk on Sunday, insists all credit must not go to his team, while he was only doing his job.

Awoniyi stated: “The most important thing for me is the team. I’m not obsessed with scoring. The most important thing is the team.

“My goal is to accumulate playing time to continue my development. I consider goals and assists as a bonus.
”I quickly had opportunities to find the way to the nets at Excel. It was not possible in Ghent because I just did not get a chance.”
