In a post-match interview following Rivers Angels’ 2-1 win against Edo Queens on matchday 2 of the NWFL Super 6, Coach Ogbonda Whyte shared his thoughts on the hard-fought match and his team’s performance.
“Even though we won 2-1, it was not an easy match for us. Though it was a good game, we had to fight hard to defend the two goals we scored earlier in the first 45 minutes,” Coach Whyte remarked, highlighting the effort required to maintain their lead.
When asked about what worked for his team, he pointed to key adjustments made after their previous match:
“After our last match, I found some faults in their game and corrected those faults, which was their ability to get to the goal before the opponent. Today they corrected the mistake and were able to go through.”
Coach Whyte also emphasized the significant psychological and motivational boost from the state government: “Psychologically and mentally, the team is well motivated by the state government.
There is a matching order from the Governor through the Commissioner of Sports to tell the girls that we need the CAF ticket and whatever it takes to bring it, they should bring it home and see what happens to change the lives of the players.
That encouraged the players to make sure they worked very hard and that they got the three points they got today.”
Discussing their chances of becoming champions, Coach Whyte expressed confidence while acknowledging the strength of the competition: “Yes, we are good enough to be champions.
With due respect to other teams, I feel all teams that came here are champions and they are all good. But me and the players are too determined to lose this much because we need this CAF ticket badly.
As a coach, I need it on my CV and the players need to be in the CAF competition, so we are all fighting to ensure that we get the ticket.
Even though we still have about three matches to go, we are confident that at the end of the day, we will scale through.”
With their sights set on the CAF ticket, Rivers Angels are poised to continue their determined pursuit of success as they meet with Nasarawa Amazons on Match Day 3 of the NWFL Super 6.
