Kano Pillars, also known as the ‘Sai Masu Gida’ side, took the lead early in the match when Mustapha Umar capitalized on ample space in the box to score the opening goal, igniting wild celebrations among their fans and bench.
However, undeterred by the setback, the Rangers side, under the guidance of coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, fought back vigorously.
Players like Kazeem Ogunleye, Chukwudi Nwaodu, and Isaac Saviour showcased dominance in midfield, while Chiedozie Okorie and Godwin Obaje led the attack.
Despite their efforts, Kano Pillars’ solid defence proved difficult to breach.
Rangers found a breakthrough just before halftime when Chiedozie Okorie capitalized on a pass from Obaje to equalize on 38 minutes, injecting renewed hope into the Enugu-based team.
The second half saw both teams returning with renewed vigour. Rangers enjoyed more possession and dominance, pressing forward in search of a winning goal.
Despite several golden opportunities, including chances for substitutes Chidiebere Nwobodo and Auwalu Naziru, the Rangers could not find the decisive goal within regulation time.
As the match ended in a deadlock, both teams resorted to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
Unfortunately for Rangers, Kano Pillars emerged victorious, converting six of their seven kicks against Rangers’ five.
In a post-match interview, coach Fidelis Ilechukwu expressed disappointment at the early exit but acknowledged the competitiveness of the game.
He emphasized Rangers’ need to focus on the remaining matches of the NPFL 2023/2024 season, urging fans to support the team despite the setback in the cup competition.
With their President Federation Cup campaign cut short, Rangers International F.C. will now turn their attention to the league, aiming to bounce back and finish the season strongly.
