The victory in Aba kept his side second in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) with 51 points from 30 matches, while Heartland wallow in 19th spot with 26 points, but the ex-Super Eagles’ winger expressed mixed feelings after the encounter.
Despite his discontentment with the low scoreline, Finidi thanked his players for giving him a victorious birthday present, as he clocked 53 on Monday.
He admitted it is good to beat a local rival, especially one desperate to avoid relegation, but the former Ajax of Holland, Real Betis of Spain and Ipswich Town of England gazelle reckoned that his lads should have scored more goals.
It took a lone 35th minute strike by Ekene Awaziem to give victory to The Peoples’ Elephant against their oriental neighbours, but Finidi, who recently served as Super Eagles’ acting coach, charged his players to be more clinical in front of goal.
Heading into their next game, away to Sunshine Stars of Akure, who currently stand 16th with 35 points, Finidi hinted that he would love to snatch another victory, even as he continues relishing the joy of Tuesday’s birthday gift from his squad in Aba.
“It feels good to win games,” said the bearded lanky star, who was fondly called ‘Finito’ during his playing days.
“We knew it was going to be a tough one, because they are fighting to survive.
“But, looking at the game, I think we had all the chances to have scored more goals. Unfortunately, that did not happen.
“At a point, I was a little bit scared, praying that they would not equalise. That’s why I am quite happy how it eventually ended.
“I told the boys they should win this game for my birthday, and that’s what they did. I didn’t want anything else from them; just victory, and I am quite happy that they won the game.”
