Rivers United Coach Optimistic Despite Narrow Victory in CAF Confederation Cup

Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma has commended his team following their hard-fought 1-0 win in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal.

Despite the narrow margin, Eguma expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance but highlighted missed opportunities in front of goal.

“It was a good game. I think the players, we had a very good game from the beginning of the match.

We scored within the 10 minutes of the game, and because we had played with high intensity, we ensured that we pressed them down, which yielded the early goal in the game,” Eguma remarked.

The early goal gave Rivers United a strong start, but Eguma acknowledged that they failed to capitalize on subsequent scoring chances to extend their lead.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Rivers United couldn’t find the back of the net again.

“One would have expected that the boys would have continued that way because we had a lot of scoring chances that early in the game.

But unfortunately, we couldn’t convert our chances,” Eguma lamented.

Despite the missed opportunities, Eguma believes his team outclassed their opponents and deserved a more convincing victory.

He remained optimistic about their chances in the return leg and emphasized the need to capitalize on scoring opportunities to secure passage to the next round.

“I think the opponents also had a dose of their own time, but we outclassed them in this game because we had a lot of possession.

We also worked with them on counters, ensured that we increased the tally, but finally, we couldn’t do that until the game finally came to an end,” Eguma reflected.

With the return leg on the horizon, Eguma urged his team to maintain their high intensity and capitalize on scoring chances to secure their spot in the semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Despite the challenges ahead, Eguma remains confident in his team’s ability to deliver a better performance and achieve their objectives in the competition.
