The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) is gearing up for the commencement of national trials to select representatives for the 2024 African Games in Accra, Ghana, and the Olympic Qualifiers in Egypt.
Dr. Daniel Igali, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, shared details about the upcoming trials during a press conference in Yenagoa.
The trials are set to take place from February 3rd to February 4th, 2024, starting at 10 am daily at the Ultra Modern wrestling arena on PDP Road in Yenizue-gene, the Bayelsa State Capital.
The selection process will identify the top three wrestlers in each of the 22 Olympic weight categories, excluding Odunayo Adekuoroye, who has already secured qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Dr Daniel Igali emphasized the significance of the trials as athletes strive to earn coveted spots to represent Nigeria in the African Games and pursue their Olympic dreams.
The National Trials will feature 22 Olympic weight classes and 18 other weight classes.
The President expressed optimism for the Nigeria Wrestling Federation in 2024, considering it is an Olympic year.
He highlighted the intense competition expected during the trials as athletes vie for Olympic slots and opportunities to compete in the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Dr Igali extended appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government for its consistent sponsorship of wrestling activities and acknowledged the support of the Federal Ministry of Sports.
He expressed hope for improved welfare packages for athletes, especially as they approach critical events like the Olympics.
