According to Agu, the primary focus should be on minimizing defensive errors, as many goals are often scored due to mistakes.
He believes that, even if the Super Eagles struggle to score goals, a solid defence can secure victories by preventing the opposition from scoring.
“The most important thing in football is to minimize your mistakes because most of the goals that are being scored come as a result of mistakes. If the defence is very solid, and we still can’t shoot when it comes to the opportunity upfront, we should be able to have an edge.
It doesn’t matter if you are scoring more goals or not; the most important thing is that you are not conceding. When the opportunity comes, they will take it, and at the end of the day, they win 1 – 0 or 2 – 0; it’s a win,” Agu explained.
Agu’s perspective aligns with the strategic importance of a robust defence in tournament football.
While goals are essential for securing victories, a solid defensive foundation can provide stability and control in matches, enhancing the team’s overall performance.
As the Super Eagles gear up for the crucial fixture against Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations, defensive resilience will likely play a pivotal role in determining the team’s success on the road to championship glory.
