In an exclusive interview with Sports247, Honourable Damilare Orimoloye, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sports in Lagos, shed light on the resounding success of the recently concluded second edition of the Lagos Keep Fit initiative.
The program, aimed at enhancing physical and mental well-being, has garnered increased participation and positive feedback.
Orimoloye expressed satisfaction with the program’s progress, noting the growing numbers and enthusiasm among Lagosians. The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Lagos State Sport Commission and the Senior Special Assistant, has become a focal point for fostering a healthier lifestyle and community bonding.
The concept for the Keep Fit initiative originated from the observation of individuals engaging in morning strolls across the city.
Orimoloye shared the motivation behind the initiative, stating, “We sought to bring them together, ensuring they stay physically and mentally fit while fostering community bonding and networking.
By providing a dedicated platform at the stadium, we’ve created a safer environment for these activities, minimizing the risk of accidents. The presence of medical teams and emergency units further underscores our commitment to the well-being of Lagosians.”
Addressing concerns about accessibility for residents in outlying areas such as Badagry and Epe, Orimoloye detailed the long-term plan for expansion.
The strategy involves spreading the initiative to different locations like Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, and Agege. After gathering valuable data and assessing population interest, the aim is to establish satellite locations with facilities.
This approach ensures that individuals in various parts of Lagos, including Alapomeji, Yaba axis, and Unilag axis, can actively participate in the program without facing distance constraints.
Furthermore, Orimoloye revealed ongoing discussions with institutions such as Lagos State University (LASU) to incorporate dedicated sessions within school premises, extending the initiative’s benefits to students without them having to leave the campus.
As the Lagos Keep Fit initiative continues to thrive, its expansion plan promises a more inclusive and widespread impact on the health and well-being of the entire metropolis.
