The Nigeria Customs Service Women’s Basketball Team showcased their prowess on the continental stage by clinching a resounding victory over the Equity Bank Hawks of Kenya, securing a commendable 5th position at the prestigious 2023 Africa Women Basketball League held in Alexandria, Egypt.
In a dominating performance, Customs triumphed over Equity Bank Hawks with an impressive scoreline of 83-53 points, capping off a remarkable campaign that saw them emerge victorious in four out of seven matches contested during the championship.
Team captain Nkem Akaraiwe emerged as a standout performer, leading the charge with an outstanding display that included 27 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and an impressive 44 efficiency rating.
Favour Chiamaka Opara and Ebere Cordelia Okeke contributed significantly, pouring in 21 points and 10 points, respectively, adding to the team’s triumphant celebration.
The Border Ladies embarked on their journey with a strong start, clinching a win over the University of Douala with a score of 57-46 points.
Despite facing a setback against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in their second game, they quickly rebounded, securing victories against Sporting of Alexandria and CNSS Basketball Club of DR Congo.
In the critical 5-8 classification game, Customs demonstrated resilience by defeating Overdose Up Station of Cameroon with a scoreline of 67-58 points.
This victory propelled them into the 5-6 placement game, where they delivered a convincing performance against Equity Bank Hawks, securing the 5th position in the tournament.
Team captain Nkem Akaraiwe expressed her delight at the team’s achievements, acknowledging the significant support provided by the Comptroller General of Customs.
“I am excited that we could reach this far given the short time we had to prepare for the zonal elimination, which was concluded a few days before our departure to Alexandria, Egypt for the competition proper,” Akaraiwe remarked.
The Sports Secretary of Nigeria Customs Service, Samuel Onikeku, lauded the commitment and support of the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, to the development of sports within the organization.
He emphasized the positive trajectory of the team and expressed optimism for future successes with enhanced preparation and timely qualification.
“For the Customs women’s basketball team to finish 5th in the continent is a thing of joy to us and the service,” Onikeku stated, highlighting the positive impact of hosting the zone 3 qualifiers, which garnered commendations and contributed to Nigeria’s representation in the competition.
