Former coach Loveday Omoruyi has raised critical questions regarding the Super Eagles’ preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Expressing reservations about the choice of Abu Dhabi as the pre-tournament camp location, Omoruyi questions the rationale behind selecting a destination with different weather conditions than the tournament host country, Cote d’Ivoire.
“First of all, does Abu Dhabi have the same weather as Cote d’Ivoire where they are going to host the Nations Cup? No. So why Abu Dhabi?” Omoruyi queried.
His concern centers on the potential lack of acclimatization to the weather conditions in Cote d’Ivoire, suggesting that staying in a West African country, such as Nigeria or Togo, could be more beneficial.
Omoruyi further elaborated on his apprehensions, especially regarding the senior national team’s preparations. “I have a little fear about their preparation now, if they are going to Abu Dhabi before the Nations Cup, that’s one,” he noted.
Additionally, the former coach highlighted a persistent challenge in the goalkeeping department, emphasizing the need to find a reliable goalkeeper.
Expressing his uncertainty about the resolution of the goalkeeping issue, Omoruyi remarked, “We’ve been having some problems in the goalkeeping area.

We’ve not been able to get a very reliable goalkeeper.” He stressed the importance of addressing this concern for the team’s success at the tournament.
Despite his reservations, Omoruyi sees potential for the Super Eagles to go far in the competition. “Even if we are not winning the trophy, we should be able to play to at least the semifinal stage. That’s my main concern—the goalkeeping area,” he concluded, underlining the critical role that a solid goalkeeping performance plays in the team’s overall success.
