In a discerning analysis, Abiodun Obafemi, a distinguished former Nigerian professional footballer, expressed his reservations about the national team’s defensive performance, emphasizing the necessity for improvement in the goalkeeping department.
Obafemi, who brings his wealth of experience to the discussion, acknowledged the commendable efforts of the defenders but underscored the significance of reinforcing the goalkeeping position.

He lamented the team’s concession of 12 goals, considering the calibre of players present in the national squad, many of whom excel in their respective club sides.
Noting that the defensive coverage has been remarkable, Obafemi, a former defender himself, commended the players in that position, affirming their satisfactory work rate.
However, he pinpointed the goalkeeping aspect as an area that demands immediate attention and enhancement.
“I am not so happy we are conceding 12 goals with the calibre of players we have in the national team. Guys that are doing very well in their club side.
The kind of goals we are conceding is not funny honestly, and looking at the work rate of our defenders, they are not doing badly. The coverage is fantastic.

I was a defender in my days too so they are doing well. I think the goal-keeping department will need to get better hands. We need better hands. It is a position all Nigerians are concerned about.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s historical strength in producing exceptional goalkeepers such as Rufai, Agbonibare, Ike Shorunmu, and Enyama, Obafemi urged a concerted effort to restore that tradition.
He particularly highlighted a recent instance where a free-kick resulted in a conceded goal, clarifying that it was unrelated to the defenders’ performance but underscored the collective responsibility of the team.
“We are always blessed with fantastic goalkeepers. Remember Rufai, Agbonibare, Ike Shorunmu, and Enyama, just to mention a few.
The last goal we conceded, the free kick has nothing to do with the defenders. The defenders also have a role to play. We are really good to go, but we just need to work harder”
