Adepoju: Past Failures Are Haunting Eagles

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju has sued for caution heading into Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, as he reckons the Nigerian players could be under pressure due to the team’s past failures in the qualification contests.

With Nigeria having failed to reach the past two editions of the African competition, Adepoju reasoned in a chat with sports247.ng that the big task the current set of players will have to carry is the fear of failure.

The former player, who made his mark playing in Spain with Castellon and Real Sociedad, said the Nigerian players should normally not be under pressure, but noted that the situation of things in the recent past is a weight they have to carry.

Adepoju said: “The antecedent of the Eagles in previous Cup of Nations qualifiers have made this game one with a measure of pressure.

“The players called up for this tie against Libya are good enough which is what earned them an invitation, but other factors come to play in this kind of situation.

“However, I still expect that the players should have in mind the need to get a good result in the game on Saturday.”
