Delta State has consistently finished first since the inception of the National Youth Games in 2013 and is determined to retain its top position on home soil.

However, Team Edo, its closest rival, is equally determined to challenge for supremacy.

Team Edo made a grand entrance with a 356-member contingent consisting of athletes, coaches, and officials. They arrived in Asaba on Thursday evening, led by Yusuf Alli, the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission. Alli, a former Olympian whose national long jump record set in 1989 still stands today, expressed his confidence in the athletes’ preparation and pledged support for their success.

Addressing the contingent, Alli emphasized the significance of their representation and urged them to uphold the principles and spirit of the games. He referred to them as “diamonds” and noted that they are being groomed for future success. Alli also encouraged the young athletes to remain focused and represent Edo State with distinction, even when competing against older opponents.

Team Edo’s 356-member contingent includes 271 athletes and coaches, along with secretaries and commission officials. The state is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of victory at the National Youth Games, with the goal of emerging as the new champion and breaking Delta State’s winning streak.
