In an impassioned plea, Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has urged the Super Eagles to secure a victory against São Tomé and Príncipe as a welcoming gift to the nation. The heartfelt appeal was made during a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials in Abuja.
During the meeting, held on Saturday, September 2, it was decided to extend the contract of Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles’ Head Coach. Peseiro, a Portuguese tactician, is set to lead the team in their upcoming match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Although this fixture is considered a dead rubber game due to the Super Eagles already securing qualification for the Cup of Nations, Minister Enoh emphasized the significance of a triumph.
Minister Enoh stated, “Even though we are home and dry in the qualifying series, I will be excited if the Super Eagles can beat São Tomé and Príncipe for the generality of Nigerians, as we celebrate this new phase of our sports.”
The meeting convened in Abuja included prominent figures such as Alh. Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the NFF, 1st Vice President Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, and Legal Counsel Barr. Okey Obi.
In preparation for the clash, invited Super Eagles players are expected to assemble in camp starting Monday, September 4, 2023. This encounter carries extra significance as Nigeria had previously dominated São Tomé and Príncipe with a resounding 0-10 victory in the first leg.
As anticipation builds for the match, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles to deliver a triumphant performance, fulfilling the Sports Minister’s heartfelt request and leaving a memorable mark on this new era of Nigerian sports.
