Nigeria Bounces Back in 2023 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship

Nigeria’s women’s volleyball team reclaimed their winning momentum at the ongoing 2023 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, securing a resounding victory over Burundi.

After a disheartening defeat to Cameroon in their second match, the Nigerian team delivered a commanding performance, clinching a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-14, 25-9) on Friday at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports in Yaounde.

The head coach of the Nigerian squad, Samuel Ajayi, acknowledged the initial challenges his team faced in the opening set against Burundi. However, he praised his players for regrouping and finding their rhythm as the game progressed.

Coach Ajayi emphasized the importance of exposure through international friendlies in propelling the team forward. He noted that while Nigeria’s women’s national team is undergoing a rebuilding phase, the youthful lineup displayed promise and potential.

Speaking about the team’s performance, Coach Ajayi stated, “Nigeria has a storied history in various championships, and though we are presently in a rebuilding phase, I have full faith that with time, our team will regain its former glory.”

Captain Comfort Amaonwu echoed Coach Ajayi’s sentiment, expressing the team’s determination to excel in the tournament. Amaonwu highlighted Nigeria’s fearless approach and emphasized the commitment to making a lasting impact.

She drew attention to the team’s impressive showing against Cameroon and assured fans of an improved performance in the upcoming match against Algeria.
