Following the just concluded 7th edition of the Wasimi summer soccer championship, a grassroots tournament that attracts top football academies in different states, SGH Sports Academy coach Peter Matthew has lauded the ‘outstanding outing’ of his boys who participated in various categories of the competition.
This edition was highly competitive due to the participation of many top teams across the country; Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, and Ile Ife among many others.
Having participated in three categories, U-10, U-13, and U-15, the U-13 was eliminated at the quarter-final stage and U-10 not making it out of the group stage but the U-15 was able to emerge champions of their category.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sports247, the coach allayed that overall the team gave a good account of themselves and that their performance is a little step in the right direction.
“It’s a tournament that is well organized, a very tough one I must say. From the start, it was not easy but with God, dedication, determination, and discipline, we were able to emerge as U-15 champions.”
Assessing his teams’ overall performance – “Well it was not a bad outing for the boys. This year was different entirely in essence because we went with so many young boys that are making their first appearance in the tournament as well as their first real test experience,” he allayed.
On the plays going forward after the conclusion of the tournament, Coach Matthew stated that the boys will keep working ahead for the big adventures ahead.
“Yes as always, it doesn’t stop here as a coach we have a long
way to go. We have to keep practicing and to keep learning and make sure the boys keep developing and also to prepare for the big task ahead.”
“We are not good yet but I believe with more hard work and dedication we can all achieve a better tomorrow,” he added.
It will be notable to know that last year, the team was crowned champions in two categories and previously, they won the three categories.
The program Initiators were so applauded by the young tactician for putting up such a tournament which serves as a viable platform for young talents to showcase themselves.
A program chaired by Victor Agbagu, hosted by Dennis M. Owumi with the mathematical Segun Odegbami, ex-Super Eagles international as its administrator, the Wasimi summer soccer championship is a yearly program for under-aged grassroots talents across every state in the country.
