Team Bayelsa on Sunday qualified in six team sports ahead of the National Youth Games NYG in Asaba, Delta State after days of the zonal elimination in Calabar, Cross Rivers State.
Team Bayelsa departed Yenagoa for Calabar on Friday with about 230 contingents comprising athletes, coaches, and officials to compete in eight sports which include Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Softball/Baseball, Rugby, Hockey, and Beach Volleyball in both male and female.
The qualified sports are Volleyball Female, Basketball Female, Softball, Handball, Football both male and female, Rugby female, and Basketball female while males failed to qualify and Hockey male and females secured qualification to the fiesta in Asaba.
Bayelsa male football team on Sunday beat Edo 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 in regulation time at the U.J Esuene Stadium to secure a spot in the National Youths Games.
Action will return tomorrow in Volleyball Male and Female by 8 am, Rugby Male at the St.Patricks Catholic College Zone 6 as well as Baseball at Federal Government Girls College after losing to Akwa Ibom.
Reacting to team Bayelsa’s performance, Director of Sports Bayelsa State Sports Council Sir Braveman Wodi, said all the sports that came for the eliminations have given their best, stating that he was elated to see Bayelsa athletes at the Youth Games age range.
He commended athletes, coaches, and officials for putting up a brilliant outing so far in the zonal elimination, adding that with the performance of team Bayelsa, more sports would join on the final day.
