This transition comes on the heels of the removal of the previous president, Bertrand Mendouga from Cameroon, citing allegations of authoritarianism and a lack of strategic vision during his tenure.

The decision to replace Mendouga was executed on August 6, 2023, during a pivotal AFBC executive council meeting held in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The proceedings were witnessed by none other than Umar Kremlev, the President of the International Boxing Association (IBA), adding gravitas to the transition.

Sources indicate that Mendouga’s ousting was accompanied by an ongoing investigation by the Cameroonian government, which has stepped in to appoint a normalization committee in a bid to rejuvenate the local body.

This move underscores the scrutiny and accountability being enforced within the African boxing arena.

Stepping into this interim role is Azania Omo-Agege Siena, a figure already well-versed in the sport’s dynamics as the Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF).

Azania Omo-Agege Siena’s new responsibility involves overseeing the realm of amateur boxing in Africa, bridging the gap until the election of a permanent president takes place.

This leadership transition and the subsequent investigations not only reflect a renewed commitment to transparency and effectiveness within AFBC but also signify a pivotal moment for boxing on the continent.

As the African boxing community looks ahead, the focus remains on stabilizing the organization, reinvigorating its mission, and fostering an environment of growth and excellence in the sport.
