The video depicted intense physical play involving Cambage, and during a break, she was reportedly punched by a Nigerian player.
Amidst the controversy, allegations have arisen that Cambage directed racial slurs at Nigerian players during the scrimmage. Nigerian player Promise Amukamara claimed that Cambage used derogatory terms like “monkeys” and told them to “go back to our country.”
Australian team captain Jenna O’Hea, who was present during the scrimmage, confirmed that Cambage used the alleged words. However, O’Hea noted that she and Cambage have not spoken since the incident.
Cambage vehemently denied using racial slurs in an interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report. She emphasized her commitment to promoting positive change in the sport despite the controversy.
In an unexpected turn, Cambage revealed that she is considering representing Nigeria in the future. She mentioned discussions with officials about leaving the Australian team and joining the Nigerian squad. Cambage’s father has Nigerian roots, while her mother is Australian.
Citing mental health concerns, Cambage withdrew from the Australian team following the scrimmage and did not participate in the Tokyo Olympics. The Australian basketball governing body conducted an investigation into the allegations against Cambage and issued a formal reprimand. Although she was not fined or suspended, Cambage has not played for the national team since the incident.
