Chippa United of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi faces a tough challenge of having to adapt to new tactics and organisation at the out-of-favour Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, following sweeping changes in technical and administrative roles.
Sports247.ng learnt that fresh ideas are rolling through Akpeyi’s team, as the club’s new chief executive, Morgan Mammila wasted little time in making changes to the side’s technical team.
This comes after Chippa’s relegation concerns deepened with a 4-2 loss to title contenders Orlando Pirates in Soweto, which left them second-from-last on the Absa Premiership table with 12 points from 17 games.
Akpeyi’s club owner, Siviwe Mpengesi fired coaches Dan Malesela and Eric Tinkler earlier this season before hiring Joe Masutha in December, saying the relegation-threatened outfit had to act fast.
However, Chippa parted ways with Masutha following their defeat to Orlando Pirates on Tuesday night.
Masutha, who was fired by Black Leopards in the first half of the season, was in charge of five matches and did not register a victory at the helm.
Akpeyi now has a new gaffer to look up to, as former Golden Arrows boss, Clinton Larsen will be taking over as the team’s coach.
Akpeyi’s club’s new CEO revealed he has big plans, adding: “I gave a recommendation to the management, looking at the stats of the team.
“We have conceded more goals in the past 10 games, and I said we need to act as soon as possible if we want to get out of relegation.
“We are busy finalising and we will release a statement when we finish what we are doing. At the end of the day we are concentrating more on the benefit of the team.”
