Ogu Questions Selection Of African All Stars 11

Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel midfielder, John Ugochukwu Ogu (Suker) has raised eyebrows over the Confederation of African Football (CAF) all-stars eleven squad that did not constitute a single Nigerian player.

While mentioning the form and club statuses of William Troost-Ekong at Udinese of Italy and Leicester City’s Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi, Ogu hinted that the selectors did not do a thorough or unbiased job.

Sports247.ng can report further that Ogu wondered how many of those that the made the team got their slots, as he pointed out that many of them are not playing for big clubs and did not do well with their national teams during the year under review.

Ogu reckoned that going to the World Cup and playing regularly with top clubs in England and Italy respectively should have paved the way for Ndidi and Troost-Ekong to find their way into the all-stars roll call.

Incidentally, Ndidi also lost out in the Best Young Player of The Year award, which several Nigerians felt should have been won by the ex-Racing Genk of Belgium youngster, which Ogu seems to agree with.

CAF’s 2018 all-stars’ team has Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa’s Ugandan goalkeeper, Dennis Onyango as the only one based on the continent, with the rest of the selected stars all being in Europe.

In defense, Ivory Coast right-back Serge Aurier was chosen alongside Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly at left-back, while Morocco’s Mehdi Benatia and Ivory Coast’s Eric Bailly complete the back four.

In midfield, Ghana’s Thomas Partey was selected alongside Guinea and Liverpool kid, Naby Keita as well as Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez on the left.

Upfront is Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who also emerged African Footballer of The Year back-to-back, following his top performances for Liverpool in 2018, joined by his club mate and Senegal star Sadio Mane as well as Arsenal and Gabon striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, the choices do not go down well with Ogu, and the former Acdemica de Coimbra of Portugal towering midfielder took to social media to air his thoughts.

In his posts, Ogu wondered what the criteria could have been in the factors that saw CAF’s egg heads arriving at their choices.

Ogu pondered in a series of posts, with a couple of rhetorical questions added: “How someone comes up here and say clubs they play matters.

“Like are you kidding me? Ekong, Ndidi had a better season for their clubs, made it to the World Cup, had a decent performance at the World Cup.

“You say clubs they play in? Aurier, Bailly, Keita all didn’t make it. Sorry to say this but @Ndidi25 should be here. My own opinion. Guys in that position didn’t do more than him.

“I repeat FOOTBALL is my life. Say man no dey Barcelona no mean say we no sabi football . Na God get all men Destiny my people.”
