Odegbami commended Air Peace for their thoughtfulness in recognizing and honoring ex-athletes who brought glory to the nation during their prime. He stated that this initiative brings fresh hope to many athletes who currently face various challenges in different aspects of life.
During a brief event, Air Peace’s CEO, Allen Onyema, announced that the airline has finalized arrangements to bestow honors upon some of the forgotten former national athletes. The beneficiaries of this initiative will include athletes from the 1976 Olympics team, who were unable to participate due to apartheid in South Africa, as well as players from the victorious 1980 African Nations Cup-winning team.
The ex-athletes will not only become ambassadors of Air Peace but will also receive several benefits. They will enjoy 12 complimentary round-trip flights with the airline within one year, in addition to one international flight. Furthermore, on July 28, they will be presented with a cash reward.
Odegbami emphasized that immortalizing the athletes by inscribing their names in gold on the Diplomacy Wall of Fame will mark a significant turning point in their lives and the lives of future retired athletes.
Speaking about the 1976 Olympics team, Odegbami said, “This is a remarkable initiative. It is wonderful to see that despite not winning any medals, they are being honored now for their patriotism. Although we had the option to compete as individuals, we collectively chose to respect Nigeria’s stand by boycotting the Games.”
Recalling the support received from the then Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo, Odegbami shared, “Obasanjo provided a brand new DC 10 aircraft to bring us back to Nigeria. Additionally, the team was composed of exceptional athletes, including great boxers like Davidson Andeh and Obisia Nwakpa.”
Odegbami expressed his hope that more corporate organizations would follow Air Peace’s example by initiating programs that bring smiles to the faces of former athletes.
Air Peace’s Diplomacy Wall of Fame initiative stands as a testament to the airline’s commitment to honoring national sports heroes and providing them with well-deserved recognition and support.
