Tobiloba Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, acknowledges that the pressure has increased as all eyes will be on her to perform at the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Following her successful defense of the 100m hurdles title at the national trials in Benin City’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Amusan expressed her readiness for the significant task that lies ahead.
Amusan, who is the reigning Commonwealth Games and African Champion, spoke confidently about handling the heightened expectations. She stated, “Now, my workload has doubled and all focus will be on me, but I am not under pressure. I trust myself and I trust my coach. I will always put in my best.”
In the women’s 100m hurdles final at the trials, Amusan showcased her dominance by clocking an impressive time of 12.70 seconds to retain her national title.
While Amusan reigned supreme, the event also saw new champions emerge in the men’s and women’s 100m races.
Usheoritse Itsekiri, based in the United States, claimed victory in the men’s 100m race with a time of 10.02 seconds, securing his qualification for the World Championships. Lagos-based veteran Seye Ogunlewe finished second in 10.11 seconds, while Alaba Akintola of Edo State took third place, also with a time of 10.11 seconds.
After his win, Itsekiri expressed his satisfaction and gratitude, stating, “I prepared myself for this race, and I am so happy I won.” Former African Champion Seun Ogunkoya and officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) celebrated Itsekiri’s achievement, noting that there is still room for improvement and advising Nigerians to keep an eye on him in Budapest.
In the women’s 100m race, Blessing Ogundiran, a home-based athlete, emerged victorious with a time of 11.50 seconds. Faith Okwose from Delta State finished closely behind in second place, clocking 11.51 seconds. Meanwhile, Ese Brume, the silver medalist at the World Championships, claimed third place in the 200m final with a time of 11.52 seconds.
After the race, Brume revealed that she utilized the event as a preparation for the upcoming challenges she will face. It is worth noting that Brume has already secured her spot in the World Championships based on her performance in the long jump event.
With Amusan leading the charge and these new champions emerging, Nigerian athletics fans have high hopes for success at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The athletes are determined and ready to face the challenges that lie ahead as they represent their country on the global stage.
