Former Super Eagles’ defender, Efe Ambrose has received an approval of his request to leave Hibernian of Scotland, and the club’s officials have issued a formal message to wish him well in his next port of call.
Sports247.ng reports that Ambrose will now be in the hunt for a new club, as The Hibs confirmed that the Canada 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup revelation had triggered a release clause in his contract.
Ambrose, who joined Hibernian on loan from Scottish Premier League rivals, Celtic in February 2017 and signed a permanent two-year contract at the end of the previous season, turned down the club’s offer of a fresh three-year contract in order to pursue playing opportunities elsewhere.
Ambrose, who grew up in Kaduna and first plied his trade abroad with SC Ashdod of Israel, played 68 times for The Hibs, after appearing 113 times for Celtic during a five-year spell at Parkhead where he won four titles.
A statement from the club read: “Hibernian can confirm the departure of Efe Ambrose.
“The 30-year-old centre-back has invoked a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Easter Road Stadium this month, having indicated a desire to pursue an opportunity elsewhere and, therefore, turn down an improved three-year contract to extend his stay in Edinburgh.
“A popular figure with players, staff and supporters alike, the club made every effort to keep Efe but respect his decision and thank him for his contribution. He leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Hibernian.”
