Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi has joined the growing number of Nigerian players in search of new clubs in the January transfer window.
Sports247.ng reports that this is sequel to his shock decision to officially terminate his contract with Tianjin Teda of China, despite still having a year to run on the deal.
A spate of injuries limited Mikel’s all round impact with Teda and Nigeria to the barest, with several missed matches against his name owing to a spate of injuries, such that his value was bound to be affected.
As another transfer period sets in across world football, latest data have revealed that any club willing to buy Mikel could get him for as low as €3.5m, which is a far cry from €11m that took him to Tianjin.
Speculation is now rife that Mikel’s woes in the last half of 2018 might have occasioned Teda, which he joined in January 2017 on a three-year contract as a free agent, to terminate his contract with a year to spare.
Consequently, Mikel has not traveled with Teda to Spain for pre-season training as he is negotiating his severance terms with the Tianjin-based club, and admits he is now thinking of elsewhere to end his career.
Mikel said: ”I broke the contract with the club, which means I will leave Teda. I would like to wish the TEDA team good luck next season.
“As for my next stop, I am not sure yet, maybe I will return to Europe, maybe stay in China.”
