Heartland Queens ended the first stanza campaign on high with an emphatic 2-0 win against visitors, Osun Babes.
The first ever clash between the sides was the end of the term NWFL Premiership matchday 7 tie on Wednesday at the Main bowl of Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
Two individual brilliance in the first half of the encounter proved decisive to hand the Owerri mainstream side their second consecutive wins of the half term.
Osun Babes started the game like a house on fire pushing the homers harder to concede two quick corner kicks which were perfectly dealt with by the Owerri side’s back women.
Unperturbed, the visitors continued to mount pressure incessantly on the hosts’ vitals in desperate search for the opener but it was the homers that laughed last in the interim.
Tormentor-in-chief and talisman (woman), Lucky Mary brought a measure of calmness with her jab that beat Osun Babes’ goalie, Elizabeth Nwachukwu hands down for the match opener in the 6th minute of the game.
Osun Babes were unrattled by the opposite early shower but continued the frantic search for the equaliser to no avail.
Again it was the home side that once again smiled when unmarked lanky forward, Chizoba Orji heads her into two-goal lead in the 16th minute.
As it has become the case in all the home side’s league matches, Lucky Mary has always received the hardest knocks from the opponents and Osun Babes did not disappoint as they truly saw her as a marked player.
Strong woman, Kelechi Orgii and midfield maestro, Favour Dagogo had their own fair taste of the hard knocks.
The half actions ended on the note with the Owerri landladies jealously guiding their precious two goal lead.
The end game half kicked off with Osun Babes intensifying the search for goal as they instantly threw more players into the fray.
Determined not to be outsmarted, Heartland Queens’ bench pushed players in search of the assurance goal.
The trio, Ezinne Wokocha, Chinedu Chinaka and Chidinma Anaele came into the fray in places of Joy Enamino, Chizoba Orji and injured Favour Dagogo respectively.
Aside the deep into the game worrying scare caused by the visitors’ diminutive attacking midfielder, Bunmi David the entire half was uneventful as the Owerri side coast home to their two successive league victories.
With the conclusion of match day 7 matchups the league will be heading to two-week break to restart on Wednesday, February 08 with Heartland Queens marching to Osogbo to confront Osun Babes in the reverse fixture.
The hard fought win over Osun Babes has taken the Owerri side to eight points and fourth on the log and eight points adrift leaders, Delta Queens.
